Moving Forward by Giving Back
Our purpose—Share Happiness—is the very DNA of our commitment to social responsibility and philanthropy.
Bluegreen Vacations supports a variety of nonprofit organizations and other charitable events, activities and initiatives. We want to make a difference in communities where our associates live and in which we, and our partners, do business. We also believe in supporting people and organizations that support and patronize those businesses.
Our Charitable Giving Program focuses on issues that affect children and their families—areas in which we believe our knowledge, experience, products and services can provide the most good. In addition to lending corporate support to important causes, Bluegreen Vacations encourages individual associate volunteerism by offering company-paid volunteer hours. Established in 2000, the BEAR Team (Bluegreen Employee Action Resource) serves as the nucleus of the company’s community service and philanthropic initiatives.
Bluegreen Vacations is focused on helping solve problems close to the hearts of our associates and their communities. We’re particularly proud to sponsor or serve the following organizations as an expression of our purpose to Share Happiness.
Founded in 1970 by parents of children with Type 1 diabetes, JDRF has raised more than $1.6 billion worldwide for cutting-edge diabetes research focusing on cure and treatments, including $199 million in 2011.
Bluegreen Vacations has been extremely active in fundraising for JDRF by coordinating major fundraising galas and local Walk to Cure Diabetes events through associate donations, raffles, a golf tournament and the sale of Ruby and Rufus diabetes bears.
The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through research. In a typical year, 85 percent of JDRF’s expenses support research and education about research, regularly earning an “A” rating for efficiency from the American Institute of Philanthropy.
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” Teaching a child to “fish” is the foundation of the Christel House philosophy of self-sufficiency. Through education, Christel House aims to break the cycle of poverty for children around the world and help them to become self-sufficient, productive members of their societies.
Christel House programs focus on education, nutrition and health care, life-skills training, character development and self-esteem. The four core values of Christel House–respect, responsibility, independence and integrity–are integrated into the academic curriculum. Four nonresidential Christel House Learning Centers in Mexico, India, South Africa and the United States serve approximately 2,000 children.
Christel House has been Bluegreen Vacations’ Charity of Choice since 2000. Christel DeHaan, a pioneer in the vacation industry and co-founder of Resort Condominiums International (RCI), founded Christel House in 1998. All proceeds and contributions go directly to Christel House programs, while Ms. DeHaan underwrites all administrative costs. Bluegreen Vacations raises funds for Christel House through voluntary payroll deductions, golf tournaments, raffles and activities at our resorts.
The American Red Cross has been assisting people for the past 125 years. Their knowledge extends over many areas such as family disaster, financial preparation and animal safety. The American Red Cross is the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the country. The Red Cross is key to connecting active duty service members with their families, and the organization advises and assists more than 15 million people annually with skills to respond to emergencies.
For many years, Bluegreen Vacations and its associates have supported the American Red Cross in its response to national and international disasters. In 2006, the American Red Cross awarded its Circle of Humanitarian award to Bluegreen Vacations in recognition of the company’s Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Most recently, Bluegreen Vacations has expanded its relationship with the American Red Cross through various volunteer and training activities at its Boca Raton location.
Since 2000, Bluegreen Vacations has made annual corporate donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation®. Historically, Bluegreen Vacations has taken a lead role in planning a major annual fundraising event, South Florida’s Finest Couples, which honors couples for their own personal significant fundraising efforts on behalf of CFF—and several of those honorees have been Bluegreen Vacations associates. The mission of CFF is to assure the development of the means to cure and control cystic fibrosis and to improve the quality of life for those with the disease. It funds medical research and care programs, which are improving the length and quality of life for people with cystic fibrosis.
Deliver the Dream, a Florida-based organization, provides programs intended to ease the burden of families affected by life-threatening illness. Deliver the Dream facilitates retreats and other family experiences that offer respite—in the form of fun and togetherness—from the often-overwhelming stress of such circumstances. Since 2002, Deliver the Dream has benefited almost 4,500 family members across Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. Bluegreen Vacations contributes fundraising in numerous ways.
Every year, Bluegreen Vacations associates get the unique opportunity to share which organizations mean the most to them. Out of all of the charities listed, twelve are chosen to be a part of the Charity of the Month Program—a program that highlights a different organization each month for a year. This gives associates, and Bluegreen Vacations as a whole, an opportunity to have a broader impact in the community and stronger source of pride for the company.
